How you can succeed in Industry 4.0?

It's very sad to see why Specialization as a concept in industry is loosing its sheen. People today being expert in one single domain or skill are often regarded as liability and laid off, and people having multiple skills are often seen highly paid or retained.

So what is the solution, and how we can ensure we develop multiple skills?

In school and work, we're often taught that specialization is bet ter and a key to success. From a young age, we're asked to pick a track that will lead us to a specific profession.

In our jobs, we often use only one specific skill set to accomplish the tasks we're assigned. This is helpful in gaining domain expertise in a subject, but employees of today truly need to be able to know and understand a multitude of topics and skills in order to be in control of their work.

As a good generalist, you'll usually start with a specialization and then add auxiliary and complementary skills as needed, until you're able to understand all or most aspects of the business as a whole, not just one specific job within it.

This is especially true when you work for Start Up: you've got to know the skill you use to get paid or build the products you sell, but you also need to have a thorough understanding of key facets like coding, People Psychology, marketing, bookkeeping, and sales.

Be a generalist so that you can thrive in Industry 4.0.
