The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a significant reform aimed at transforming the education system in India, focusing on quality, equity, and access. To enhance students' participation and make them aware of the various reforms of the higher education system, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched the "NEP SAARTHI" program at campuses of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs).
What is NEP SAARTHI?
NEP SAARTHI stands for Student Ambassador for Academic Reforms in Transforming Higher Education in India. The initiative brings together students as active participants in the implementation of the NEP 2020. The UGC is the leading organization to implement NEP 2020 and calls for collective contribution and commitment from all key stakeholders, including students.
When was it started?
The timeline for the announcement of the program is as follows: Inviting Nominations in May 2023, Deadline for receiving Nominations in June 2023, Announcement of NEP SAARTHIs in July 2023, and Orientation of NEP SAARTHI in July 2023.
Special Features of NEP SAARTHI
The program will have 300 NEP SAARTHI. Students who are currently undergoing higher education at various levels can participate in this initiative. The nominated students are expected to have an outstanding personality, possess excellent communication skills, organizational capabilities for conducting outreach programs, creativity, a sense of responsibility along with being a team leader.
Benefits to Students
The NEP SAARTHI will be recognized by UGC and awarded a “Certificate of Recognition”. They will also be mentioned on UGC’s official social media handles, invited to all relevant online events organized by the UGC, and given the opportunity to publish an article in the UGC Newsletter.
Role Played by Students
The NEP SAARTHI will work as an ambassador to promote NEP 2020, create awareness regarding NEP 2020, disseminate information regarding NEP 2020, promote NEP 2020 initiatives on social media, collect feedback from students to improve the implementation of NEP 2020, and provide guidance to students and other stakeholders regarding NEP 2020 initiatives and how they can benefit from them.
How to Apply
The UGC will seek nominations from the Vice Chancellors, Directors, and Principals of HEIs and eminent academicians. Each university may nominate up to 3 students to be considered as NEP SAARTHI, along with a brief write-up justifying the nominations. Based on the nominations, UGC will select 300 NEP SAARTHI among the nominees.
